Storm and Hail Damage: How to Document It Properly

Photographs, notes, and a written description are the difference between a smooth claim and a frustrating one.

June 8, 2026

When hail or high wind hits, the damage is not always obvious from the ground. Filing a claim with only a vague description of the problem is where most homeowners run into trouble.

Start with safety. Photograph and note what you can observe safely from the ground: dents in gutters and downspouts, damaged vents, cracked or displaced trim, granules collecting in downspout splash areas, and any new water showing inside.

Write down the date of the storm and where you observed damage. Note where water is entering the home and when it started. A dated record carries far more weight than a memory reconstructed weeks later.

Then get a professional inspection. We go up and document conditions with photographs and a written description of what we found and what repair the roof actually requires. That documentation is yours to share with your insurer.

To be clear about our role: the claim is yours to file, and your insurance company decides it. We are not adjusting the claim or deciding coverage. We document the property accurately so you can make your case with real information instead of guesses.
